Over 5,000 cases of dengue have been recorded in Bukidnon from January to August 2024. According to the Provincial Health Office (PHO), the 5,099 dengue cases recorded in the province are higher than the 4,000 cases logged in the same period in 2023. PHO reported that at least 17 people have died from dengue in the province. However, there is no outbreak of the disease just yet, and authorities have yet to discuss the declaration of a state of calamity.

Malaybalay City has the most cases with 926, followed by Valencia City with 508. These cities have each reported two deaths due to dengue. In response to the rising number of dengue cases, the local government of Malaybalay City has conducted fogging operations in areas where dengue cases were reported. Additionally, the PHO has distributed treated mosquito nets to some schools to help fend off dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Bukidnon PHO Dengue Coordinator, Sergio Flores, emphasized the importance of cleanliness in preventing dengue. He stated, "If you don't clean up and then fog, mosquitoes will just keep coming back because they are not eliminated from their breeding sites. Therefore, we must clean up thoroughly."

Health authorities have reminded the public to practice the 5S habit against dengue, which includes:

1. Search and Destroy: Look for and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
2. Self-Protection: Use mosquito nets, repellents, and wear long sleeves and pants.
3. Seek Early Consultation: If symptoms appear, seek medical advice promptly.
4. Support Fogging: Cooperate with local government fogging operations.
5. Sustain Hydration: Stay hydrated to help manage symptoms if infected.

By following these measures, the community can work together to reduce the spread of dengue and protect public health.
